Root Touch-Up: How Often You Actually Need One

The root touch-up is the least glamorous service on our colour menu and the one that quietly decides whether your colour looks intentional or neglected. Get the rhythm right and your hair reads as *coloured*. Get it wrong and it reads as *grown out*.

Clients ask me for a fixed rule. There isn't one. But there is a way to work out your own interval, and it takes about a minute.

What a root touch-up is — and what it is not

A Root Touch Up at Kara is Rs. 1,200+ and takes about 45 minutes. We apply colour only to the regrowth at the roots, matching it to the existing colour through the lengths.

It is not a full-head refresh. If the mid-lengths and ends have faded badly, or the tone across the head has drifted, that is a different service — Global Hair Color at Rs. 4,000+, or a gloss to re-tone. A root touch-up on faded lengths will give you crisp roots against dull ends, which usually looks worse than leaving it alone.

The arithmetic behind the interval

Hair grows roughly one to one and a half centimetres a month. That average is the starting point, but three things move your personal number:

1. The contrast between your natural base and your colour. This matters more than growth rate. If your natural base is dark and you have gone light, one centimetre of regrowth is visible from across the room. If you have gone one or two shades either side of your natural colour, three centimetres can pass unnoticed. High contrast means shorter intervals — around four weeks. Low contrast can stretch to eight or ten.

2. Grey percentage. Grey regrowth reads as a bright line rather than a soft shadow, because it reflects more light than pigmented hair. Clients with significant grey at the parting usually need four to five weeks; the same person with grey only at the temples might go six or seven.

3. Where your parting falls. A centre parting exposes the maximum regrowth surface. If you change your parting or wear your hair back, you buy yourself a week or two.

When a root touch-up is the wrong service to book

If you are coming in every four weeks and finding it a burden — in cost, or in time you do not have — the honest advice is not to book more touch-ups. It is to change the technique.

Balayage at Rs. 4,000+ and Ombre at Rs. 3,500+ are hand-painted, freehand techniques that deliberately leave the root area softer and more graduated. There is no hard regrowth line, because there was never a hard start line. Many of our clients from the Hinjewadi and Balewadi belt — people whose work weeks do not allow a monthly salon appointment — move to balayage specifically for this reason, and end up in the chair three or four times a year instead of twelve.

The upfront cost is higher. The annual cost is usually lower, and the hair spends far less time under colour.

Similarly, if what is bothering you is dullness rather than regrowth, you do not need a touch-up. You need a gloss or tone refresh. Book a consultation and let us look before you pay for the wrong fix.

Why stretching too far costs you more

There is a real penalty for leaving it too long, and it is not only cosmetic.

When regrowth passes roughly four to five centimetres, we can no longer treat it as a simple root application. The new growth at the scalp processes faster than the length further down, because it sits closer to body heat. Colouring a long band of regrowth in one pass produces the "hot root" effect — a visibly warmer, brighter stripe near the scalp.

Correcting that means sectioning and timing the application in stages, which takes longer and costs more than the touch-up would have. In the worst cases it becomes Colour Correction, which starts at Rs. 1,500+ and rises with the complexity of the problem.

Booking on time is cheaper than booking late. That is the whole rule.

Stretching the interval without it showing

If you want to extend the gap honestly, these work:

• Move your parting. A zigzag or side parting breaks the regrowth line visually.
• Use a root touch-up spray or powder for the last week before your appointment. Temporary, washes out, buys you days.
• Add a few face-framing highlights. Softening the contrast right around the hairline hides regrowth better than anything else.
• Book the appointment before you need it. Our Saturday slots in Wakad fill first; clients who book at the four-week mark for a six-week appointment always get the time they want.

What does not work: washing less to "preserve" the colour at the roots. Regrowth is new hair. No amount of careful washing slows it down.

What happens at your appointment

We check the regrowth against the existing colour under proper light, confirm the formula still matches — colour drifts over a year, and so does hair — and apply only where it is needed. Forty-five minutes, start to finish.

If we think you would be better served by a different technique, we will say so at the chair before we mix anything. We would rather lose a touch-up booking than have you spend on a service that is not solving your actual problem.
