Why Your Hair Colour Fades Fast in Pune's Hard Water
Wakad and Hinjewadi run on hard, borewell-fed water that strips fresh colour within weeks. Here is what actually causes the fade, and how we protect colour at Kara Salon.

Almost every colour client who sits in my chair in Wakad asks the same question within six weeks of leaving: *why has it gone dull already?* They followed the aftercare. They bought the sulphate-free shampoo. And the rich brown they paid for has turned brassy and flat.
In most cases the culprit is not the colour, the stylist, or the shampoo. It is the water coming out of the tap.
What "hard water" actually means for coloured hair
Hard water is water carrying a high load of dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. Much of the Wakad, Balewadi and Hinjewadi belt is supplied or supplemented by borewell water, and borewell supply in this region is typically harder than treated municipal supply.
Three things happen when you wash freshly coloured hair in hard water, every day, for weeks:
1. Mineral deposits build up on the cuticle. Calcium and magnesium ions bind to the hair shaft and leave a fine film. That film is what makes colour look dull and "muddy" rather than reflective — the light is scattering off mineral residue instead of bouncing off a smooth cuticle.
2. The cuticle is forced open. Hard water tends to sit at a higher pH. Colour is sealed in when the cuticle lies flat; the higher the pH, the more the cuticle lifts, and the faster the dye molecules wash out.
3. Shampoo stops working properly. Minerals react with the surfactants in shampoo, so it lathers less. Most people respond by using more product and washing harder — which strips colour faster still.
Combine those three and you get the pattern I see constantly: gorgeous colour on day one, visible brassiness by week three, a client convinced the salon used a cheap product.
How to tell it is your water and not your colour
A few signs point clearly at water rather than the service:
- Your hair feels rough or "squeaky" straight after washing, even with conditioner.
- Shampoo will not lather the way it used to, or you find yourself needing two washes.
- Colour fade is even all over rather than concentrated at the ends. Damage-driven fade is worst at the oldest hair; mineral fade is uniform.
- Whites and greys pick up a yellow or dull cast quickly after colouring.
- A white towel or pillowcase shows dinginess over time.
If two or more of those sound familiar, water is a major factor in your fade.
What we do in the salon about it
At Kara we treat hard water as a colour-planning problem, not an afterthought.
We read the hair before we mix anything. If there is heavy mineral buildup, the same formula will develop unevenly — the shaft is not accepting colour uniformly. Colouring over that buildup is how clients end up with patchy tone and a colour correction bill later.
We clear buildup first when it is needed. Our Cryo Scalp Detox is a 100% organic, chemical-free scalp treatment that uses cryo cold therapy to lift away buildup from water, product and styling sprays and to unblock follicles. On a scalp and hair shaft loaded with mineral residue, running this before a colour service gives the colour a clean surface to bind to. It takes about an hour and starts at Rs. 2,500.
We pick formulas and tones with fade in mind. In a hard-water area it is worth choosing a shade a touch deeper or more neutral than your target, because you will lose some warmth control in the first month. That is a formulation decision, and it is why we do not simply match a reference photo without asking how and where you wash.
We tell you honestly what maintenance the colour needs. A Root Touch Up is Rs. 1,200+ and takes 45 minutes. Full-head techniques like Balayage at Rs. 4,000+ are deliberately lower maintenance because the regrowth line is soft. If your water is aggressive and your schedule is full — which describes most of our clients working in the Hinjewadi IT corridor — a technique with a forgiving grow-out is a better investment than a global colour you cannot maintain.
What you can do at home
None of this requires expensive equipment.
Rinse in the coolest water you can tolerate. Heat lifts the cuticle; cool water helps it lie flat. The last thirty seconds matter most.
Use a chelating or clarifying shampoo — but sparingly. A chelating shampoo binds minerals and rinses them away. Once every two to three weeks is plenty. Used weekly, it will strip your colour faster than the water was doing.
Do not wash daily. Every wash is another exposure. Two to three washes a week is enough for most hair types, and dry shampoo covers the gap.
Consider a shower filter. A basic inline shower filter reduces mineral load meaningfully and is the single most effective home fix in this belt. It is not a miracle, but it changes the rate of fade.
Condition from mid-length to ends, every wash. Conditioner helps re-flatten the cuticle after washing. Skipping it in humid weather because hair "feels heavy" is a common mistake here.
Wait 48 hours after colouring before the first wash. The cuticle needs time to close and the colour to set. This one is free and people still skip it.
The monsoon makes it worse
From June onward, Pune's humidity climbs and hair swells as it absorbs atmospheric moisture. A swollen shaft has a raised cuticle, and a raised cuticle loses dye. That is why colour laid down in April often looks noticeably flatter by August.
If you colour before or during monsoon, plan a gloss or toner refresh partway through the season rather than assuming the original service will simply hold. We would rather book you a short refresh than have you think the colour failed.
When to come in
If your colour is fading unevenly, going brassy within weeks, or simply refusing to take the way it used to, bring it to us before you reach for a box dye — correcting a home fix is almost always more work than doing it properly the first time. Colour Correction starts at Rs. 1,500+, and the price depends entirely on how much there is to undo.
We are on Datt Mandir Road in Wakad, opposite Costa Rica Society. Message us on WhatsApp with a photo in natural light and we will tell you honestly whether you need a full service, a refresh, or just a change in how you are washing at home.
